Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a simple procedure, but one that requires a skilled touch to achieve the designated goal. At Suncoast Skin Solutions, we most often use dermabrasion as a modality to improve either post surgical scars or rhinophyma, a result of rosacea. The use of dermabrasion for full face rejuvenation has fallen out of favor due to problems with pigmentary change and scarring, and due to the rise of alternate methods of rejuvenation, such as Whisper, chemical peels, and carbon dioxide laser resurfacing, which offer comparable results with less downtime.

Noticeable scars suffer from various characteristics that enable their presence to be easily detected by the human eye. Some of these qualities can be corrected by scar revision.

Many patients fear a long scar, but in reality the length of a properly oriented scar is rarely problematic, rather it is often the contour, the height discrepancy that catches light and creates shadows that allow the scar to be visible. Dermabrasion attempts to correct that by decreasing the vertical distance between the scar and normal skin, in essence, ‘blending’ it in to normal native skin. Manual pressure is applied to remove the most superficial layer of skin. As with any procedure, there are risks, the most common being change in pigmentation, but this is a relatively uncommon complication.
