Laser Hair Removal

How many treatments are necessary?

Many patients are curious why repeated treatments are necessary, and the reason is simply physiologic and not financial. The laser works by disabling hair follicles that are
actively producing hair at the time of treatment. This specific part of the hair cycle is known as the anagen phase. At any time, some hair follicles are dormant, the so-called telogen and catagen phases. Hairs in this part of the cycle are not touched by the laser, so therefore to maximize hair removal, several visits are necessary for total treatment to attempt to target the anagen hairs. Dr. Ewanowski and his staff will work with you to develop the optimal treatment strategy, but typically plan upon undergoing at least six treatments every 4 to 6 weeks for optimal results.

What results can I expect?

Typically, long-standing hair reduction can be achieved after a series of treatments. As a rule of thumb, approximately 50% – 80% of hair volume is reduced after these treatments, with thin-skinned areas, like the bikini and underarm, showing the best clinical response and the thicker skinned areas, like the chin and back, with decreased clinical improvement.

How much time is allocated for treatment?

Each laser pulse treats a skin area measuring about one-quarter inch, which can contain ten or more hairs. The amount of time needed for treatment depends on the size of the area to be treated. The lip usually takes less than five minutes. Other areas, such as the legs or back, require significantly longer treatment times.
